![]() ![]() Anand said that the menace is so alarming that every month at least 100 cases of de-addiction treatment are registered in the states. Dr Rajendra Anand, a Gandhinagar-based consultant psychiatrist and de-addiction specialist, said that situation is alarming in the state as the number of addicted youths in the age group of 18-25 has increased in the past few years. He said that there are around six hospitals in the state which are running rehabilitation centres with the help of NGOs to make people free from various addictions. "We have been conducting awareness campaigns in rural areas via audio-visual media so that the menace of drug and liquor could be curbed," Kumar said. B K Kumar, director of prohibition and excise, said that the state agencies have been implementing the prohibition policy strictly. ![]() In the past 10 years, Gujarat registered 92 cases of seizure of narcotic substances in which drugs like cocaine, heroin, hashish, ephedrine, mephedrone and charas were recovered from different parts of the state. According to figures released by Social Defence Bureau of the Centre, Gujarat spent Rs 38.39 lakh, Rs 36 lakh and Rs 26.13 lakh in 2013-14, 2014-16, respectively on de-addiction programmes wherein 5,904 people benefited. In 2013-14, Gujarat spent Rs 38 lakh of central grant on rehabilitation of 1,845 people addicted to alcohol or drugs, while Punjab, which is infamous for its youths being highly addicted to narcotics substances or liquor, spent just Rs 31.61 lakh for de-addiction of 1,476 persons. Ahmedabad: Gujarat may be a dry state but it is spending more on de-addiction programmes than any prohibition-free state. ![]()
